According to a recent report generated by India Times India seems to be facing a large skill gap as 80% of the engineering graduates are not employable signifying the need for a more upgraded education & training system.
While the educational institutions deliver millions of trained youngsters every year the corporates are still found to be complaining that there is dearth of the necessary skill & talent they require for a job.
As per the Aspiring Minds National Employability Report that was released based on the study conducted on over 1,50,000 engineering students who graduated in 2015 from over 650 colleges in India, 80% of these engineers are unemployable.
Words by the research Aspiring Minds CTO Varun Aggarwal
“Engineering has become the de-facto graduate degree for a large chunk of students today. However, along with improving the education standards, it is quintessential that we evolve our undergraduate programs to make them more job centric.”
However, if we talk about cities, the employability of engineers differs from one to another. While Delhi spots the number one position in consistently producing the highest number of employable engineers, Bengaluru spots the second followed by the western parts of the country, as revealed by the report.
On the one hand, when Kerala & Odisha have stepped into the top 25 percentile list of most employable states Punjab & Uttarakhand on the other hand have dropped to the 2nd and 3rd quartile, the report added.
However, seems like all the endeavors of the past to eradicate gender inequality in terms of employment have been rewarded as the research on employability by gender unveils a healthy trend with almost equality amongst males & females making each role free from any gender bias.
Of course, for a few roles, the employability of females was found to be a little higher such as sales engineer, non-IT, associate ITeS or BPO, and content developer roles.
The report also talked about the tier-III cities that too produce a share of employable engineers and must be included in a recruitment perspective.
“These candidates could also possibly fill the entry-level hiring needs of several IT services companies,” it said.
Where lays the problem?
If you compare the per capita income of the developed countries and that of the developing countries, you will find that there is a big difference. In fact, it’s not the story of today, we have been hearing this since our childhood forget about GenX, that studies abroad mainly in developed countries are quite job-oriented and practical while in developing countries like India is much about scoring high and knowing big theories without any practical knowledge of how to implement them.
This is what! Even today our education system is much backward and we think more about grabbing degrees than grabbing skills. Of course, nothing can be more valuable than a degree but a degree that promises a skill with it. Taking a degree just for the heck of taking is not going to get you a good job!
And! The idea is buried deep inside our minds that degrees like a B.Tech or B.E will land us in a better world with better careers. Rather than looking at the employment scenario & job requirements and settling on the education we should take we all like a herd of cattle jump into the well with dozens of ABC institutes offering incompetent degrees.
The Alternative: What these engineering graduates can do?
People in India should think about grabbing skills to complement the demands of time & technology rather than holding the old beliefs that are not going to take them anywhere!
